Joan Marie Heuer Patterson

Joan Marie Heuer Patterson, 82, of Mint Hill and formerly of Spokane, Washington, died Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at her daughter’s home where she had been living. Joan was born in Los Angeles, California, on September 9, 1933, the daughter of Robert Burke Heuer and Marguerite Grace Dowdall. She grew up in Los Angeles, graduated from high school and college, and attained a degree in teaching. On September 21, 1957, she married Robert Warren Patterson. Before Joan could start a career in teaching, she and Robert were blessed with five children whom Joan made caring for at home her full time profession. In 1971, they moved to Spokane, Washington, where she went to work in Child Protective Services for the State of Washington. When Robert died two years ago, she moved to Charlotte to be with her daughter. A lifelong Catholic, she was a member of St Thomas Moore Catholic Church of Spokane. She also enjoyed shopping and was very involved as a den mother when her sons were in scouting. Most of all, she loved time spent with family and friends and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Joan is survived by her four children: Joyce Kaye Patterson Fischer (husband Jeff) of Mint Hill, North Carolina, Steven Leonard Patterson (wife Laura) of Colville, Washington, William Robert Patterson of Reardan, Washington, and Edward Michael Patterson of Las Vegas, Nevada; three grandchildren: Melissa Dawn Carpenter (husband Greg) of Matthews, North Carolina, Kerry Anne Patterson Fischer of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Rachel Lara Rosenstein Das (husband Dave) of Las Vegas, NV; and two great-grandchildren: Noah Gregory Josue Carpenter and Gabriella Grace Carpenter. She is further survived by numerous other family and friends. Joan was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Janet Faye Patterson; her parents; and two brothers, Burke and Michael Heuer. Joan’s family has given the privilege of caring for them to the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home in Matthews, North Carolina and the Hennessey Smith Funeral Home of Spokane, Washington. Joan will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Holy Cross Cemetery. Services will be held at the cemetery chapel on Saturday, April 9, at noon.
