Jose Angel Velez

Jose Angel Velez, nickname "Pepe" age: 85 born: 2/9/1930 died: 1/13/2016 born: Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico Jose was the youngest child with 3 brothers and 7 sisters. All have passed before him. He worked from an early age with his parents and siblings to contribute to the welfare of the family He came to New York in his early twenties and worked as a foreman in a welding company until he was established He returned to his home town in Puerto Rico to propose to his future wife, Felicia whom he had known for many years. He was one of many suitors and she and her parents decided he was the best candidate. They were married and relocated to NYC and were blessed with two children, Joe and Zoe. He worked several more years as the foremen of the welding company. His brother-in-law owned a grocery store and trained him in the business. He then opened his own grocery store. He worked in this grocery store for over 20 years. During their time in NYC, they served as the support system for many other family members from Puerto Rico who where establishing themselves in the new environment of NYC. For the rest of his life, he would stay in touch with these family members to assure they were doing well. There was always a place in his heart for helping others. They lived in NYC for over 40 years. At the age of 62 he retired from the grocery business. He moved to Coconut Creek, Fla and resided there for 12 years. His son lived just a few blocks away and the family was always together. His son blessed him with 2 beautiful granddaughters and they were an integral part of his life. He and Felicia and Zoe enjoyed walks around the lake and the township where they lived. He, Felicia and Zoe followed his granddaughter and son to Mint Hill, NC in 2006. He resided with this family in Mint Hill for 10 years. He became a great-grandfather to 5 great grandchildren. He and Felicia were always available to help out with the little ones. During his entire adult life, baseball was his passion. He and his son would go to Yankee stadium or Shea stadium to watch the Yankees and Mets. The Yankees were his favorite team. When they relocated to Florida, they would go to spring training and the Marlin's games. He instilled the love of sports in his son and oldest grandson's life. In summary, Jose was a kind, giving, loving man. He will always be remember in our hearts for his dedication to others. He is survived by his wife, Felicia; his son, Joe; his daughter, Zoe; his grandchildren Jessica and Melissa; his great grandchildren Javon, Camerin, Devin, Drake and Arielle and one granddaughter on the way.
