London Washington

London Washington, age 94, of Charlotte NC, entered his heavenly home December 6, 2016 at the Salisbury Veterans Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born in Awendaw, SC, on March 12, 1922. His parents Sam & Louvenia Washington had several children, London was the youngest. He grew up in Charleston, SC. and attended Henry P. Archer Elementary School, and Burke High School both in Charleston, SC. London met Margarite Collins better known as "Essie" when he was a young man delivering groceries. In 1941 London was 19 years old and promised Essie's father he would provide for her. He joined the Navy to have a source of income. On August 19th 1941 they were married; three months before the attack on Pearl Harbor. London served in the Navy for 19 months overseas, after his service he was honorably discharged and returned to Charleston, SC. In July of 1947 he moved his family to New York City where he worked in the Navy shipyard in Brooklyn as a metal worker for over 35 years. In 2010, London and Essie moved to Charlotte to be near their daughter, five months later his beloved Essie passed away. London had a love of Blues music, Dancing, Gardening, but most of all his family. Survivors include his daughter, Marcella (Ernest A.) Jones of Charlotte; grandchildren by Marcella: Ernest Michael Jones Sr of Spartanburg, SC, Adrienne Monique Peters of Charlotte, Kesia (Rodney) Glenn of Staten Island, NY, Michelle (Mario) DiCola of Stroudsburg, PA, Secquone (Shanique) Jones of Charlotte;grandchildren by the late Clayton Washington: Lynnette Washington-Murphy of New York, Pamela Washington of New York, Sharon Washington of New York, Troy Washington of New York. He is further survived by his brother-in-law, Leroy Collins,and numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son London Clayton, and a daughter Elizabeth. London will be buried at Salisbury National Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday December 13, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 at Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home. Funeral will be Wednesday 10:00 am (pending confirmation).
