Lucy Virginia Burgess

Lucy Virginia Burgess, 90, of Charlotte, died May 31, 2023, at her home at Carmel Hills Living Center. Lucy was born in and raised in Waco, NC, on November 1, 1932, the daughter of Forrest and Annie Whitesides Carpenter. She met the love of her life in Bobby Grill Burgess and on April 24, 1955, they were married. They were lovingly devoted to one another for 68 years. During their years together, they lived in Taylors, SC; Greenville, SC; Charlotte, NC; and Matthews, NC. She was also a proud member of her church family at First Baptist Church Matthews for 54 years. Lucy loved working in the yard and tending to her flower garden. She also loved cooking for her friends and family and was famous for her spaghetti and many other meals. You did not have to stop by to eat, however, just having people in her home was a joy. Most of all though, Lucy loved her family. Taking care of Bob and Robin and watching Robin get married to Bruce Elbertson at the age of 52 were her greatest joys. In addition to her husband Bob Burgess, daughter, Robin Elbertson and son-in-law Bruce Elbertson, Lucy is survived by nieces and nephews Carolyn Kelley, Rio Rico, AZ, (who was more like a sister to her), Karen Elliott and David, Greenwood, SC, Tami Hefner and Doug, Conover, NC, Debbie Marney and Bill, Cary, NC, Charles Lovelace and Winnie, Sangerville, ME, Joe Lovelace and Joie, Lawndale, NC, Michael Carpenter and Regina, Hickory, NC, Mitchell Carpenter, Shelby, NC and Kenny Carpenter, Ellenboro, NC. She is also survived by a number of great-nieces and great-nephews and Robin's brother-in-law Lance Elbertson who was like a son to her. Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son of 2 days, Hal; and her siblings: Edna Lovelace, Evelyn Carpenter, Harmon Carpenter, Warren Carpenter, and Paul Carpenter. Lucy’s family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for her and for them. Visitation will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at First Baptist Matthews. Services will follow there at 11 AM. After the service, Lucy will be taken in formal procession to her final place of earthly rest at Sharon Memorial Park.
