Mary Johnson

Mary Frances Johnson, 94 years, of Brooklyn, New York, passed away in her sleep on Thursday, June 17, 2021, at Pruitt Health Town Center of Harrisburg, North Carolina. Mary (aka Frances) was born in Philadelphia, PA, on July 3, 1926, the daughter of Dewey and Marie (Hacker) Johnson. After living there for a few years, her mother moved to Brooklyn, NY after her husband passed. There Mary entered and graduated from Nursing School as an Assistant Nurse and began her 30 years nursing career at Kings County Hospital, the largest hospital in Brooklyn. She enjoyed caring for and serving the members of Union Baptist Church as an Usher under the leadership of Rev. Aaron A. Woods. She also was the President of the Nurses Unit of Jesus Christ Family Church (formerly known as Canaan Missionary Baptist Church) and was a member of Sarah Sherman Unit of Ushers & Nurses for 50 years. She was a faithful member of Jesus Christ Family Church, now under Pastor Constance Sumner, for 37 years, she was also one of the caring Mothers in the church. In addition to serving her church families, Mary also served the families in her neighborhood as a member of her Housing Association. Clearly, Mary’s life was about serving and caring for others. She was well known for her Caramel Cakes. She was a devoted Mets fan as is her son-in-law Sam and grandson Ryan. It didn’t manner if she was attending a night or day game, but it had to be on a day they were given away something. Other than serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, nothing was more important to her than loving and caring for her family. Mary will be fondly remembered as the “Road Warrior” and will be missed by all who knew her. Mary is survived by her three daughters: Cassandra (husband Sam) Tillman Sr of East Stroudsburg PA; Loretta Johnson (William Pugh) of Brooklyn NY; Patricia (husband William) Odlum of Concord NC. Grandsons & Great Grands: Darren Johnson of Brooklyn NY, Sam (wife Cathy)Tillman Jr of East Stroudsburg PA(D’andre & Desmond), Ryan (wife Lisa) Johnson Fort Mills SC (Conner & Caitlyn), Jamel Johnson of Brooklyn NY (T’Shyne & Layla), Kiel Odlum of Los Angeles CA; and bonus granddaughter, Toya and great grandson, DaShaun. Mary is further survived by her close cousin and best friend, Rosa McKie and her favorite niece, Doris Dunkley, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends. When her sister from another mother Alma Key left this world to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Frances made sure that her five children, Michael, Ronald, Cheryl, Pam and the late Kimberly were loved and cared for. She was preceded in death by her sons: Melvin and Ernest Johnson; and her siblings Leon, Roberta, Isabell, Azarene and parents Marie and Dewey Johnson. The family would like to make a special thank you to her home health aide Ms. Norvette Frys. Mary’s family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for her and for them. A gathering will take place beginning at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at the funeral home, 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews, NC 28105. At 2:00 PM, a service will be held in the funeral home chapel. Mrs. Mary will then be taken back to Brooklyn, NY, into the care of Funeraria Juan – Johns Funeral Home. Services in Brooklyn will be held on Saturday, June 26, 2021, at Calvary Unified Baptist Church, 1520 Herkimer St., Brooklyn, NY. The visitation will begin at 9:00 AM with the service immediately following. Mrs. Mary will then be taken in procession to her final place of rest at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn.
