Mary Lee Stewart

Mary Lee (Caldwell) Stewart was born on August 2, 1908, in Matthews, NC, the oldest daughter of five children born to Addie Caldwell and Bud Porter. As a young child growing up in a section of Matthews called Renfrew’s Corner, her best friend was the late Mrs. Viola Boyd. They played together daily and would walk for miles, from Renfrew’s Corner to Tank Town, a subsidiary of Matthews. She put her life into the hands of the Lord at a very early age and continued being a loyal and faithful servant throughout her life. She worked as a maid and Nanny for some of the most prominent residents in the Matthews area, including Sonny Smith, the brother of the world renowned TV host, singer, and guitarist, Arthur Smith. She was the matriarch of the community and everyone came to her for comfort, advice, even laughter at times! She was unselfish and had a pure soul and heart as big as the world. She was referred to by all that knew her as MaMary! MaMary always enjoyed sewing and quilting. She sewed through the years, even until her departure from the physical world. At the age of 105, she could still thread a needle without using glasses. MaMary is survived by her daughter, Rosetta Mackey and son, Walter Stewart both of Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren: Deborah Tate, Andrew Mackey, Steven Mackey, and Walter Stewart, Jr.; twenty seven great grandchildren; a brother-in-law Clarence Stewart; two sisters in law, Mary Bridges and Willie Coleman; and numerous great great grandchildren, other relatives, and friends. MaMary was preceded in death by a brother, Rich Caldwell; four sisters: Rose, Minnie, Louise, and Lucille; and her husband, Robert Lee Stewart. MaMary’s family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of serving them at this time. A gathering of friends and family will take place on Friday, February 28, 2014, from 6 to 9 PM at the funeral home, 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews, NC 28105. At 7 PM, all present will gather in the funeral home chapel for a service honoring the blessing the MaMary was to all.
