Nellie Carolyn Hartis

With deep love in her heart and flowers in her garden, Nellie Carolyn Hartis departed this life on July 27, 2025, surrounded by family in the comfort of her home—a final blessing made possible through the hospice care of VIA Health Partners. Born on August 31, 1939, in Mecklenburg County to Otis and Annie Mae Stilwell Turner; Nellie was known for her enduring strength, compassion, and work ethic. A graduate of East Mecklenburg High School, she began her career at A&P Grocery at the age of 17, eventually retiring as a produce manager from Bi-Lo. Her dedication and warmth touched colleagues and customers alike. On September 21, 1957, Nellie married her lifelong companion, Herbert Hartis. Their loving union spanned 66 cherished years until Herbert’s passing in October 2023. Together they built a home rooted in devotion, hospitality, and quiet joy. Nellie was happiest outdoors, tending to her yard and coaxing blossoms from the earth with a gifted green thumb. Her love of flowers was more than a hobby—it was an expression of the beauty she nurtured in every aspect of life. She is lovingly remembered by her sons: Joel (Sheila) of Monroe, and William (Renee) of Camden, SC; her grandchildren: Kristen (David) Jackson, Jonathan (Kayla) Hartis, and Lauren Roth; and her great-grandchildren: Hunter Jackson, Asher Roth, Alice Hartis, and Tucker Jackson. She also leaves behind siblings: Steve (Shirley) Turner, Phil (Darlene) Turner, Doris Jean Freeman, Joyce “Dot” Wilson and Shirley Allen. Nellie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Herbert, her parents Otis and Annie Mae, and her siblings Donald Turner, Bill Turner, and Nancy Vinson. Nellie's family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of serving her and them. Services will be held at Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home, 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, with visitation beginning at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 1, 2025. A funeral service led by Pastor Chris Baucom will follow at noon. Interment will take place at Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Road, Charlotte, NC. To honor Nellie’s memory, plant a flower—or many—and tend them with love. That’s how she would have wanted to be remembered.
