Doris Duncan
June 20, 1927 - June 28, 2021
Doris Duncan, age 94, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2021. Doris was born in Charlotte, NC, on June 20, 1927, to Luke and Lelia Cochrane. She grew up with eight sisters and brothers. Doris had many wonderful memories of growing up in the Mint Hill area, where she lived most of her life. She would later marry her first husband, Charles Williams, who preceded her in death. Doris and Charles had five children, who later would bless them with many grandchildren. Doris married her second husband, Lee Duncan, and had several loving years with him until he too was called home by the good Lord. Doris had several jobs over the course of her life, but everyone heard about her position as door greeter at Walmart! She “officially” had retired at 62, but quickly became bored and took her part-time job at Walmart. She happily worked there for 13 years. She finally decided to retire again just before her 80th birthday. For years, she would frequent that store to say hello to the many friends she had made there. Doris loved people and had a smile for everyone she met. In turn, she was loved by many. People claimed her smile could light up a room. She was especially fond of babies. She never met a baby that she didn’t coo over and want to hold and kiss. It wasn’t just God’s two-legged creatures that she loved, for she had an avid love of animals as well. It didn’t really matter if it was a cat, a dog, or even a horse. She just loved them all. Her German Shepherd, Trouble, loved and fiercely protected her. Not even her own children were allowed to hug her if he was in the same room. She also had a cat who begged for rides on her walker. Sassy would wait for Doris to come out of her room in the mornings and immediately jump on the walker for a ride to the living room. They say that animals are great at judging character, and it must be true, because every animal she met took to her instantly. Doris had a strong faith, and of late often spoke of seeing her family when she passed. She would always smile at the thought of it. In addition to her first and second husbands and her parents, Doris is preceded in death by her son David Williams, siblings Margaret Gladden, Helen Eudy, J.C. (Buck) Cochrane, Agnes Arant, Mack Cochrane, and Richard (Dick) Cochrane. She is survived by sisters Jo Burnette and Kelly Evans, sister-in-law Margaret Cochrane, children Vivian (Jim) Cooper, Tommy Williams, Lynn (Jim) Fleming, Jo Carol (Jake) Goble, daughter-in-law Karen Williams, 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Doris’ life will be held at 11 AM on Friday, July 2, 2021, at Wilson Grove Baptist Church. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 AM until the time of service. Doris will then be taken in procession to her final place of earthly rest at Sunset Memory Gardens.
