Doris Mae Jackson
April 12, 1934 - April 8, 2022
Doris Mae Jackson April 12, 1934 – April 8, 2022 On April 8, 2022, the Lord called home our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin and friend. “Mert” as she was affectionately known was born on April 12, 1934 in Atlanta, Georgia to Emma Peek and Lonnie Cox. She was raised at the age of 2, by her mother Emma Hancock and her dad Theodore Hancock. She was educated within the Philadelphia Public School System and graduated from Girls High. While in Philadelphia, she met her first husband Lawrence Douglas Leach Sr. To this union five children were born: Rita, Rickey, Roslyn, Terri and lastly, Toni. Doris enjoyed socializing and had a great work ethic. She worked at various jobs, but her most memorable job was as a Central Sterile Processing Technician. In April of 1987, Doris married Bennie Jackson, who preceded her in death. Doris enjoyed cooking for her family, tending to her floral garden, decorating her home and hosting barbecues and pool parties. She was also an avid sports fan who never missed an opportunity to watch a Philadelphia Eagles football or 76ers basketball game. Once she relocated to Charlotte, she would occasionally watch a Carolina Panthers football or Charlotte Hornets basketball game but the “Philly” teams were her heart. Prior to her declining health, she enjoyed traveling with her children, dancing, and singing. She loved watching QVC, CNN, MSNBC and nightly gameshows. But her most enjoyable moments came when her grandchildren and great grandchildren came to visit. She constantly exclaimed, “ I am truly blessed”. She was preceded in death by her stepsons, Bruce Jackson and Bennie “Teddy” Jackson Jr. Recently, Roslyn Riley, her daughter preceded her in death on February 28, 2022. She is survived by her children, Rita Winfield (Vernon); Lawrence Leach Jr. (Vivian);Terri Riley (Wayne);Toni Blanton (Frank); Brian Jackson; Jacquelyn Greenwood (Phil); sister Michelle “Linda” Cox; brother-in-law Steven Jackson (Emma) and cousin Gloria Jean Stroud (Nick); 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and a host of family and friends. Doris' family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for her and for them. The family will receive friends beginning at 11 AM on Saturday, April 16, in the funeral home chapel at 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews, NC 28105.
