Edna May Phillips Bakley
January 17, 1920 - October 23, 2019
Edna May Phillips Bakley, 99, of Locust, NC, and formerly of Magnolia, NJ, entered into the kingdom of heaven on Wednesday, October 23, 2019. Through the blessing of Novant Hospice, she was able to be at home with her family when she passed. Edna was born in Philadelphia, PA, on January 17, 1920, the daughter of Edwin and Mabel Falls Phillips. She grew up in south Jersey and married George Stephen Bakley. She was blessed to be a mom for the years her children were younger and later, she went to work for WT Grant selling wool before becoming a medical secretary for a hospital ICU. When she was not working, Edna enjoyed sewing and was a wonderful seamstress and knitter. As her husband George was a vice commander, Edna was also a member of the Volunteer Ambulance Corps as well as the state Green Cross Ambulance Association. From chaplain to secretary, she stayed very involved for many years. She also enjoyed travelling, and would recount with fondness the miles spent in the car seeing the country, especially Mount Rushmore. After living in south Jersey for over 65 years, George preceded her in death in 2011. After his death, she came to Charlotte to be closer to her son. While in Charlotte, she was very involved with St Michael Anglican Church where her son was the Pastor. While she enjoyed many things in life, what Edna most enjoyed was time spent with family and friends and she will be fondly remembered as a wonderful mother and friend. She is survived by two children, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was not just a nana to her grandchildren, but even her great grandchildren enjoyed the times spent riding on the scooter with her and getting candy from next to her seat. Edna’s family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for her and for them. A gathering to celebrate the life, love and spirit of Edna will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, at the funeral home, 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews, NC. The gathering will begin at 6:00 pm and then at 7:00 pm, all present will join in the funeral home chapel for a service led by the The Most Reverend Thomas E. Gordon. Services will conclude that evening. Edna will then be taken back to Pitman, New Jersey, where she will be placed in her final place of earthly rest next to her husband George at the Hillcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and in honor of the love and care shown to their mother, the family respectfully requests memorials and donations in her name be made to Novant Hospice. These can be mailed to Novant Health Hospice, PO Box 33549 , Charlotte, NC 28233-3549. For further information, please visit https://www.novanthealth.org/home/services/hospice.aspx
