Helen Anatolia Malashenko-Albl, 57, of Matthews, died unexpectedly on August 14, 2017. Helen was born in the Ukraine on May 4, 1961, the daughter of Anatoliy and Nadia Malashenko. She grew up there and began a relationship with a young man stationed in Germany with the US Army, Ludwig “Lou” Wolfgang Amadeus Albl. Upon his return to the United States, they were married and lived in the Winston-Salem area before moving to Charlotte. Blessed with an ability to understand language, she used her talents to teach children in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, Charlotte Latin, Charlotte Preparatory as well as private tutoring. She enjoyed playing badminton and was also an avid reader. After her husband died in August of 2015, Helen volunteered with hospice to help others in the same need. Most of all, Helen enjoyed the time spent with family and friends. Helen is survived by her children: Alex Albl of Matthews and Alice Albl; a brother in Ukraine, Sergei Malashenko; and three nieces: Sasha, Dasha and Anna. She is further survived by numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lou, and her parents. Helen’s family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for them. A gathering to celebrate the life, love and blessing of Helen will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, August 19, 2017, in the funeral home chapel, 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews, NC 28105. Friends are welcome to visit with the family from 1 PM until the time of service. All services will conclude at the funeral home.
