James "Dub" Wilson Rushing
April 10, 1937 - February 20, 2017
James Wilson Rushing, 79, of Mint Hill, NC, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, February 20, 2017, at the Hospice of Union County in Monroe. Also known as “Dub”, he was born at home in Mecklenberg County on April 10, 1937, the son of Doll and Annie Bell Hagler Rushing. Dub grew up on the family farm, leaving school before graduating to help his family with the farming chores. On September 30, 1955, he answered his country’s call to service and enlisted in the United States Army. He was subsequently honorably discharged as a Pvt-1 with the Heavy Mortar Co 4th RCT of Fort Devens, Massachusetts on September 27, 1957, serving in the reserves for 7 years. He remained in Massachusetts for about 20 years getting into the glass business and retiring from City Plate Glass before returning to the Mint Hill area in 1986. His time in Massachusetts had left him with such a northern accent that when he returned, he was also nicknamed “Yankee”, something that brought laughter to him when he heard it since he was born and raised in Mint Hill. Here he started his own company, JJ Glass, from which he ultimately retired. When not working, Dub loved the outdoors, especially archery and gardening. Up until the time of his death, he was so proud of his gardens that he would carry photos to show others his favorite hobby. When the time arrived, he would can his harvest, even teaching others how to do it the “Rushing Way”. Dub also enjoyed fishing and watching the races. Most of all, Dub loved time with spent with Ms. Margaret Paul, his life partner who never left his side for the last 29 years. Together they would enjoy “the dance” every week where he would two step and enjoy bluegrass music. He also enjoyed time with others, including his morning “Bojangles” coffee club where he never had a shortage of free biscuit coupons or people to whom he would show pictures of his garden. His wit and candor will be sadly missed by all who knew Dub. Dub is survived by his brother, Leonard Rushing (significant other Jeanne Hillsman) and his sisters, Shirley Lewis and Deborah Forbis, all of Mint Hill. He is further survived by numerous family both here and in Massachussetts as well as other friends and acquaintances. He was preceded in death by Margaret, his parents, and five brothers and sisters. Dub’s family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for them. A service led by Pastor Lee Proctor to celebrate the life and blessing of Dub will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, February 23, at the funeral home chapel, 4715 Margaret Wallace Road. Friends are welcome to gather with the family at the funeral home from noon until the time of service. Following the service, Dub will be taken in formal procession to the Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Road. There he will be laid to his final earthly place of rest next to Margaret following military honors. Dub’s family would like to especially thank and acknowledge the wonderful staff of Union County Hospice for the excellent and dignified care. In honor of that love and concern, memorials in Dub’s name are respectfully requested to Union County Hospice, 700 West Roosevelt Blvd, Monroe, NC 28110 or online at www.houc.org Please take a moment to visit Dub's tribute wall and share a memory or photo with the family.
