Robert John Wiley III

September 17, 1948 - April 10, 2021

Robert “Bob” John Wiley III, 72, of Charlotte, died Saturday, April 10, 2021, at Atrium Health – Carolina’s Medical Center. Bob was born on September 17, 1948, in St Louis, Missouri, the son of Robert John and Marjorie Heisler Wiley II. His father was a manager with International Harvester and Bob’s family moved throughout the Midwest as he grew up. Eventually his family moved to Charlotte, where he attended South Mecklenburg High School. Gifted at sports, he played as a pitcher in high school before graduating from South Mecklenburg. Bob went on to attend UNCC and then CPCC to pursue his love of commercial art. He obtained his degree in Advertising and Commercial Art and went on to work as a commercial artist. One of Bob’s first jobs was designing the maps and tickets used by a little theme park nearby, a park named Carowinds. One day at Shoney’s, he met the lovely Vicki Hartsell, who worked there as a waitress. He went on to write her a note asking her if she would join him at the Sportsman’s Show. She accepted, they dated, and on Thanksgiving Day, Nov 22, 1973, they were married at Northside Baptist Church in Charlotte. Bob went on to work for Red Food Stores in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as a warehouse manager before he and Vicki went on to work for Bethel Bible Village. There they worked for years caring for children with Bob acting as a Director. In 2004, Bob and Vicki returned to Charlotte to take care of Vicki’s parents and they have remained since. Bob enjoyed many things in life, especially fishing; spending time within his church whether on a committee, serving as a deacon, or singing in the choir; going to Krispy Kreme; and visiting QT for the “fresh yesterday pastry” as he like to call it. Bob found joy in the simplest things in life and just the experiences around him brought him joy, especially the walks he took with his dogs. Most of all, Bob loved the time spent with others, especially his family, and he will be fondly remembered and sorely missed. Bob is survived by his wife, Vicki, of Charlotte; a daughter, Beth Wiley-Gordon of Tennessee; his grandchildren: Elise Wiley, Michael Gordon, Sean Gordon, Ashleigh Gordon, and Andrew Gordon; great grandchildren: Ella Kate Alderman and Aiden Gordon; his brother, James “Jim” (wife Sandra) Wiley; and his brother, Charles E. (Annette) Wiley. Bob is further survived by his favorite canine companions, Bindi and Suzy; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a daughter, Kara; his sister, Barbara Johnson; and his brother, Steve Wiley. A service honoring the life, love and blessing of this wonderful man led by Pastor Richard “Bo” Riley will be held at 2 pm on Friday, April 16, at University Hills Baptist Church, 1500 Suther Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28213. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 pm until the time of service. Following the service, Bob will be taken to his final place of earthly rest at Gethsemane Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, 1504 West Sugar Creek Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28262. In honor of Bob’s love of children and his church, donations in his name would be appreciated to either Bethel Bible Village, https://www.bethelbiblevillage.org/ or University Hills Baptist Church Building Fund, https://universityhills.org/
