Frances Ross

Verlyn Frances Ross, 89, of Mint Hill, died unexpectedly at her home on Sunday, January 19, 2020. Frances was born in Lithonia, Georgia, on October 23, 1930, the daughter of Ivey and Lena Stone Garmon. She grew up there and in high school, she met the charming Matthew Yates Ross, Jr., whom she would later marry on November 10, 1950, in Atlanta, Georgia. They eventually moved to Charlotte where they have been residents for the past 40 years. Frances enjoyed many things in life, counting her blessing of being a homemaker and mother at the top of the list. She was also a faithful member of her church family at First Baptist Church of Charlotte, where she shared that deep faith teaching Sunday School. In her free time, she also enjoyed sewing and working outdoors with her flower garden. Most importantly, devoting time to her family was her top priority. She always ensured that she had time to personally spend with each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Frances is survived by two daughters: Ginny Ross of Harrisburg and Julie Sheehan of Harrisburg; six grandchildren: Matthew Dwyer of Breckenridge, CO, Alexis Dwyer of Petersburg, VA, Jessica James of Harrisburg, NC, Andrea James of Harrisburg, Justin James of Bonaire, GA, and Kara Sheehan of Harrisburg; and six great grandchildren: Alycia Dwyer, Roderick T. Polk II, Amorah Crawford, Cooper Avant, Kaeson Gregory, and Rylan Schnake; two sisters: Louise Burke and Linda Hicks; and a brother, Aaron Garmon. Frances is further survived by the women of her Sunday School Class and numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Yates, and son, David. Frances’ family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for her and for them. Services honoring the life, love and blessing of Frances led by Pastor John Cashwell will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 23, in the funeral home chapel, 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews, NC 28105. Visitation will take place at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Following the service, all are invited to join in procession to the Evergreen Cemetery where Frances will be laid to rest next to her husband, Yates.
