James Marshall

James Marshall, 73, of Charlotte, passed away on May 21, 2026, at Atrium Health in Charlotte. Born on August 24, 1952, in Waynesboro, Georgia, James was the son of James Albert Jones and Katie Mae Marshall, who taught him early that honest work and capable hands could carry a man far in life. From the time he was young, James had a gift for working with his hands—a natural craftsman whose skill seemed to flow as easily as breath. He understood wood, tools, paint, soil, structure and working on cars as a mechanic the way some people understand music. There wasn’t much he couldn’t fix, build, or bring back to life. Homes were his canvas, and he approached every project with patience, pride, and a quiet mastery earned through decades of doing the work himself. James could paint with a steady, practiced stroke. He could shape and repair with a carpenter’s eye for detail. He could coax order and beauty from a yard with the same ease he brought to a workbench. Whether it was a room that needed new life, a wall that needed straightening, or a yard that needed tending, James showed up with his tools, his know‑how, and his unwavering belief that anything worth doing was worth doing right. He built not only with lumber and nails, but with generosity. If someone needed help—family, neighbor, or stranger—James was the one who arrived with a toolbox in hand and a solution already forming in his mind. His craftsmanship strengthened homes, but his kindness strengthened the people in them. James leaves behind a legacy measured not in possessions, but in the countless things he repaired, restored, and made better simply by putting his hands to them. His life was proof that skill is a blessing, work is a language, and a man’s hands can tell the story of who he was. James is survived by His children: Chadwick Cowans, Montez Cowans, Tywan Cowans, Jamien Marshall, Javon Dooley, Kierra Marshall, DeVera Graham, Shateah Marshall, Journee Marshall and Malonie Hightower His Grandchildren: Goddess Marshall, Journey Marshall, Tyrecuse Graham, TiAzia Graham, Tydarereous Graham and Talia Graham His Siblings: Jerry L. Jones, Benny L. Jones, Annie Marshall and Alice Marshall His Special Friends: Pearl Rorie, Pam Dooley, LaDasha Hightower James is further survived by numerous nieces including Linda Byers and Diane Marshall, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Larry Marshall. The Marshall family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for him and for them. All are invited to join with the family from 1 to 3 pm on Wednesday for a time of service and remembrance of a life well lived and well shared with so many. ** Special thanks to Pearl Rorie and sister Alice Marshall for supporting niece Linda Byers with James while hospitalized during his last days. The comfort provided, last food request by Alice Marshall and Pamela Dooley and errands ran is commendable. Thanks to everyone who visited and showed love to James during his final days. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, learned from him, or lived in a space shaped by his care.
