Jean Lavon Buzzell

Jean Lavon Buzzell, 87, of Matthews, died peacefully surrounded by family on December 21, 2021. Through the blessing of hospice, she was able to be at home. Jean was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on May 12, 1933, the daughter of William and Mabel Williston. She went to Commerce High School in Springfield where she was an honor student specializing in business studies. Jean was a dedicated student, spending much of her time at home on her schoolwork. After graduating high school in 1951, she attended Bryant College in Providence, Rhode Island and completed an Associates Degree in Accounting. On June 27, 1953, she married her high school sweetheart, Clarence Buzzell. Jean and Clarence lived in Springfield for the first few years of their married life and then moved to Somers, Connecticut where they lived in the house they built for themselves and their three children for thirty-five years. While living in Somers, Jean spent her days as a full-time housewife and mother. Jean and Clarence both had a passion for church work and she often worked as the church treasurer and bookkeeper. She also partnered with Clarence in a leading role in the startup of Somers Baptist Church. Jean wanted her children to have a Christian education and was instrumental in arranging for her two daughters to attend Dublin Christian Academy in New Hampshire for their high school education, and for all three children to attend Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. It was while visiting their children on the college campus in Greenville over the course of almost twenty years that she and Clarence decided to move down there in 1995 where they lived until 2016 when they made the decision to move to Matthews, North Carolina so that their daughter Kerstin, a hospital administrator and experienced health care professional could oversee their medical needs in their later years. Jean was known and highly regarded for working hard to care for her family, friends, and church members. She and Clarence were very active in their church and attended every meeting and function. No one was a stranger, and she and Clarence would often be the last people to leave church after making sure they had spoken with as many people as possible. Jean is survived by her three children: David (wife Dianne) Buzzell of Simpsonville, SC, Barbara (husband Michael) Witkowski of Enfield, CT, and Kerstin (husband John) Liebner of Charlotte. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Drew and Denae; Brianna, Susan and Daniel; and Bethany and John Mark as well as great grandchildren Lily, Dominic and Carter. Jean is further survived by numerous other family and friends. Jean’s family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for her and for them. Graveside services will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at Charlotte Memorial Gardens. Pastor Jeff Smith of Indian Trail will lead the services.
