Veona Mathis Caudle

Veona Mathis Caudle, 101, of Charlotte, NC, and formerly of Russellville, Arkansas, died on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. Veona was born on July 4, 1914, in Yell County, Arkansas, the daughter of Wade and Celestia Mathis. She grew up in Arkansas, graduating from Danville High School in 1934 where she was captain of her girl’s basketball team. She went to work for the phone company in Danville and on November 1, 1941, she married Thomas Ewin Caudle. They moved moved to Pope County where they raised their family. In 1950, their son Bob was killed in action in the Korean Conflict. Ewin preceded her in death in 1991. In 2001 she moved to Charlotte to be closer to her daughter. Veona enjoyed many things in life including camping, gardening, cooking, restoring furniture and making her home a special place. She also enjoyed sports of all types and watched them on television. Blessed with the talent of using her hands, she was also a master seamstress and quilter. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was a member of the quilting circle. Most of all, she enjoyed time spent with family and friends and she will be joyfully remembered. Veona is survived by her daughter: Gail Seago of Charlotte; three grandchildren: Skye Sauerwein (husband, Jim) of Charlotte and their children Weslie Sauerwein and James Sauerwein of Charlotte; Kelly Rilea (husband, Don) of Deland, FL, and their children Justin DeLuca (wife Yeci) of Tacoma, WA, Anna Leigh Pryor (husband Kell) of Fayetteville, GA, and Steven Rilea (wife, Danielle) of Ponder Texas; and Barrie Wells of Charlotte. She is further survived by five great great grandchildren: Seago DeLuca, Norah Gail Pryor, Hunter Watson, Hadley Rilea and Harbor Rilea; and numerous other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, four sisters and two brothers. Veona’s family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home of Charlotte, NC, and the Humphrey Funeral Home of Russellville, AR, the privilege of caring for them. Visitation in Charlotte will be held from 7 to 8 pm on Friday, March 25, at the Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home, 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews, NC 28105. Veona will then be taken to Russellville, AR, where visitation will be held from 7 to 8 pm on Tuesday, March 29, at the Humphrey Funeral Home, 2801 West Main Street, Russellville. Graveside services will follow on Wednesday at 1 pm at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Russellville before Veona is laid to rest next to her husband. In honor of the care and love shown to Veona, the family would like memorials in Veona's name be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, online at www.hpccr.org. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to the staff of White Oak Manor where Veona was a resident.
